I’m a professor of politics based at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the KU Leuven, Belgium, and the author of several books of literary non-fiction.

I teach and carry out research on minority politics in Central and Eastern Europe, nationalism, democracy, and restorative justice. Most of my work is rooted in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans (I have an MA in Slavic languages and Eastern European Studies and a PhD in political science). I’ve worked on social movement formation around the plight of the Roma and write about the perils of democratization and the politics of reconciliation in fractured societies.
