I'm a professor of politics at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) and a writer of essays and literary non-fiction.
My work focuses on minority politics, nationalism in East-Central Europe and the Balkans, democratization, and, most recently, restorative justice. I have lived, studied and conducted research in several European countries. In 2007 and 2008, I was a visiting scholar at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard University. At the KU Leuven I'm currently affiliated with the LINES research unit (Leuven International and European Studies). I live in Brussels.
In 2019, my nonfiction book Aantekeningen bij een moord (Notes on a Murder) appeared with De Bezige Bij (Amsterdam). In 2014, De Bezige Bij published Ex, a book of essays and reportage in and about the former Yugoslavia. My first academic book The Romani Movement appeared with Berghahn Books in 2006. Other work of mine has appeared in a range of academic journals as well as in literary and news magazines.
